Does a used Model 3 or Model Y have a heat pump?
Every Model Y has a heat pump. A used Tesla Model 3 has one if it’s model year 2021 or later; model years 2017 to 2020 use a resistive heater instead. The model year is the 10th character of the VIN, so this is one answer Valette can mark Confirmed from the VIN alone.
How do I read the model year from the VIN?
Look at the 10th character. For a Model 3:
- Resistive heater:
H= 2017,J= 2018,K= 2019,L= 2020. - Heat pump:
M= 2021,N= 2022,P= 2023,R= 2024,S= 2025,T= 2026.
For a Model Y the answer is yes for every model year, from the first builds in March 2020.
What about a Model 3 built in late 2020?
The VIN doesn’t record the build month, but here it doesn’t need to. The heat pump arrived with the October 2020 Model 3 refresh, which came in with the switch to model year 2021. Every model year 2021 or later Model 3 has it, and no model year 2020 car does.
Why does the heat pump matter?
Winter range. A heat pump warms the cabin with far less energy than a resistive heater, so the car keeps noticeably more of its range in the cold. If you drive through real winters, this is one of the biggest differences between two otherwise identical used cars.
Is there anything to check on a heat-pump car?
Yes, on some years. Valette’s known-issues list flags Model 3 2021–2022 and Model Y 2020–2022: these were recalled in February 2022 (NHTSA 22V-050) for a valve-controller fault that could kill cabin heat and defrost below about −10 °C. The fix shipped as a software update, but some cars still had hardware valve failures afterward.
On the test drive, run the heat and defrost hard. Ask for service history that mentions the heat pump, EXV or “octovalve”; a documented replacement is a plus. Valette lists the issue for the model year; it doesn’t look up whether this car’s recall work was done.
Check a specific car
Valette reads the VIN for you. On iPhone, scan the barcode in the driver’s door frame or type the VIN, and it shows the likely answers for that model year and factory, each marked Confirmed, Very likely or Check the car. Free, no account, no ads, and the iPhone app works offline.
