How to tell an LFP vs nickel battery on a Model 3 or Model Y

If the 7th character of the VIN is F, the car has an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) pack, and that’s the only case the VIN settles outright. Otherwise the pack type of a used Tesla Model 3 or Model Y is inferred from the motors, factory and model year, and the quickest proof is on the car: if the charge screen recommends a daily limit of 100%, it’s LFP. Nickel packs recommend 80 to 90%.

Which cars are LFP and which are nickel?

What do the other battery codes mean?

Letters other than F in position 7 are general lithium-ion or capacity codes. Single-motor cars that are actually LFP can carry them too, so they don’t settle the question on their own. That’s why the motor count (character 8), the factory (character 11) and the model year (character 10) carry most of the weight.

Why does the battery type matter?

It changes how you live with charging. LFP packs are happy charged to 100% every day and take lots of charge cycles, but they lose more displayed range in deep cold and charge slower when frozen. Nickel packs prefer an 80 to 90% daily limit and handle cold better. Neither is better overall: LFP suits short daily driving, nickel suits road trips and cold climates.

Does the battery type tell me the battery’s health?

No. The type tells you what to expect, not what this pack has left. Real-world studies show both kinds commonly holding about 87 to 93% of their original range past 100,000 miles (160,000 km). Valette shows what’s normal for the type and age, but it doesn’t measure the battery. For that, see what a VIN can’t tell you.

Check a specific car

Valette reads the VIN for you. On iPhone, scan the barcode in the driver’s door frame or type the VIN, and it shows the likely answers for that model year and factory, each marked Confirmed, Very likely or Check the car. Free, no account, no ads, and the iPhone app works offline.

Build windows come from published reporting and community documentation of Model 3 and Model Y production. Dates are approximate, and cars built near a change can go either way. Always confirm on the car.
