Intel vs Ryzen screen on a Model 3 or Model Y: how to tell

Every Model Y built in Austin or Berlin has the faster AMD Ryzen screen. For a used Tesla Model 3 or Model Y built in Fremont or Shanghai, it depends on the build date. The switch from Intel Atom to Ryzen came around November to December 2021 in Shanghai and December 2021 to February 2022 in Fremont. These dates are community-documented; Tesla never published them. In the car, Controls > Software lists the processor on Ryzen cars.

How does the VIN help?

Two characters do the work. Character 11 is the factory: A (Austin) or B (Berlin) means Ryzen, Confirmed. For F (Fremont) and C (Shanghai), character 10, the model year, places the car:

The 2021 and 2022 answers are “very likely” because a model year spans about 15 months of builds. The manufacture date on the driver’s door-frame label settles them.

What if the build date falls inside the switch?

If the door-frame date lands in the changeover months (November to December 2021 for Shanghai, December 2021 to February 2022 for Fremont), the factory could have fitted either processor. Valette shows Check the car, and the in-car check below is the answer.

How do I check in the car?

On the touchscreen, open Controls > Software. Ryzen cars list the processor there. You can also judge by feel: the older Intel screen visibly lags in maps, menus and the camera views.

Why does the screen processor matter?

It’s how the car feels every day. The touchscreen runs almost everything, and the Ryzen version is visibly snappier in maps, menus and the cameras. Some newer in-car software needs it too. Intel cars work fine but feel their age. It’s the difference you’ll notice on day one and every day after.

Check a specific car

Valette reads the VIN for you. On iPhone, scan the barcode in the driver’s door frame or type the VIN, and it shows the likely answers for that model year and factory, each marked Confirmed, Very likely or Check the car. Free, no account, no ads, and the iPhone app works offline.

Build windows come from published reporting and community documentation of Model 3 and Model Y production. Dates are approximate, and cars built near a change can go either way. Always confirm on the car.
