What a VIN can’t tell you about a used Model 3 or Model Y

A VIN records how a car left the factory: maker, model, body, battery code, drive unit, model year, factory and serial number. On a used Tesla Model 3 or Model Y it can’t tell you the battery’s health, the car’s condition or accident history, whether recall work was done, which software features are paid for, or even the month it was built. Those need the car, its paperwork and an inspection.

Can a VIN tell me the battery’s health?

No. The VIN shows the build, not what this pack has left. As a guide, healthy packs lose about 5 to 8% early on, then roughly 1 to 2% a year, and most hold 85 to 93% of their original range for many years. The real red flag is range well below about 80% of original on a still-young car.

To check it, note the displayed range at a known charge percentage, or get an OBD-II battery reading or a pre-purchase inspection (US shoppers can also pull a Recurrent report). Valette shows these norms for the car’s battery type and age; it doesn’t test the battery.

Does the VIN show when the car was built?

Only the model year (character 10), and a model year usually covers builds from October of the year before through December. The month is on the label in the driver’s door frame. Near a hardware changeover that month decides things like AI3 vs AI4, so Valette lets you add it.

Can I see recalls or accident history from the VIN?

Not from its characters. Valette lists known issues for the car’s model and model year from a curated list. It isn’t a live recall or history lookup. Check open recalls in the official database (Transport Canada in Canada, NHTSA in the US), and get history from a vehicle history report and an inspection.

Does the VIN show the trim, options or paid software?

Not directly. Trim isn’t encoded, so Valette uses the drive unit as a guide for things like the sound system and marks that Very likely. On single-motor cars built before November 2021, the heated steering wheel and rear seats are fitted but may need activating, so try the toggles. Features bought as software, like Full Self-Driving, depend on the car’s account: confirm them on the screen and with the seller.

Which cars does Valette cover?

Model 3 and Model Y. Other VINs get the basic decode only, without the build answers.

Check a specific car

Valette reads the VIN for you. On iPhone, scan the barcode in the driver’s door frame or type the VIN, and it shows the likely answers for that model year and factory, each marked Confirmed, Very likely or Check the car. Free, no account, no ads, and the iPhone app works offline.

On the App Store Or check a VIN in your browser

Build windows come from published reporting and community documentation of Model 3 and Model Y production. Dates are approximate, and cars built near a change can go either way. Always confirm on the car.
